Roberto Tempo suddenly passed away on January 14, 2017 during a ski mountaineering trip in the Alps, leaving his family, friends and colleagues in a deep grief. Roberto was special for many people around the world, appreciated and loved both for his outstanding professional skills and for his human qualities, for his warmth, for his integrity, and for his open mind. We will miss him as a colleague, leading researcher and friend.

Several initiatives to honour the memory of Roberto have been organized or are under way.

  • A workshop entitled Roberto Tempo: In memoriam was held at the Institute of Control Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia on January 30, 2017
  • A Semi-Plenary session entitled A Tribute to the Memory of Roberto Tempo was held at the IFAC World Congress in Toulouse, France
    • Time: Monday July 10, 2017, 18:15-19:10
    • Place: Main Amphitheater of Toulouse Congress Center, with video projection in a parallel room
  • Starting from 2017, the usual Workshop on uncertain dynamical systems organized by the Technical Committee on Robust Control of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) changed its name in Workshop "Roberto Tempo" on Uncertain Dynamical Systems. The workshop took place the week before the IFAC World Congress in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France.

  • A special session dedicated to Roberto and his work was held at Convegno AUTOMATICA.IT 2017 (Milan, 11-13 September 2017)
  • Special sessions and events dedicated to Roberto and his research have been organized in occasion of the 56th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, Melbourne, Australia
  • The CSS Board of Governors has approved the institution the IEEE CSS Roberto Tempo Best CDC Paper Award.
    The Award will be given annually for the best paper (as judged by the Tempo Award Committee) presented at the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and will consist of a certificate laminated on a plaque and a cash award in the amount of $1,000 made payable to the lead author of the winning paper.
    For all the considered papers, originality, potential impact on any aspect of control theory, technology, or implementation will be evaluated. The Award Committee will consider also the relevance and practical significance in applications, and the clarity of the writing.
    The first Tempo Award will be presented at the 2019 CDC.
